Autism Acceptance

April is Autism Awareness month, but the truth is, autistics don’t need us to be more aware of autism—they need us to be more educated about it. In fact, autistics have asked for April to stop being Autism Awareness Month and start being Autism Acceptance Month. Take everything you think you know about autism and put it on a shelf. I’m going to try to link a blog post from an actually autistic adult at least once a week this month. Autistics can speak for themselves, please listen. :-)

This month, you will be asked to donate a lot to Autism Speaks. I ask, on behalf of my son and every other autistic to whom I’ve spoken, to refrain from doing so. If you want to donate to an autistic charity, the Autism Self-Advocacy Network: http://autisticadvocacy.org could certainly use your support!
